A year or so ago, I read about Chinese farmers buying and tending land in Angola. I thought maybe I would look into this as we were traveling, but there wasn’t the time or energy to follow up on it. Doing a bit of research now though, it doesn’t seem an unlikely scenario and it’s definitely worth looking into again…
According to an article on yesterday’s BBC website, the United Nations food agency predicts that world will need to increase it’s food production by 70% by 2040 to cover the rising population needs. Countries short of arable land – like China – will have to look elsewhere for farmlands. And they have their sights set on Africa.
I still can’t find that article I read last year, but it’s a real issue which will become more and more interesting over the next few years I think.
